Christiaan Karel Appel, affectionately known as 'Kik' in his youth, was born in Amsterdam in 1921. His artistic journey began early; at just fourteen, he created his first oil painting, a still life of a fruit basket. His passion for art was encouraged by his amateur painter uncle, Karel Chevalier, who gifted him a paint set and easel and provided early lessons.
