ABOUT

Born in 1818 to a wealthy brewer who was also the mayor of Vilvoorde, Jean-François Portaels showed an early talent for drawing. His father encouraged this by sending him to the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1836, where he studied under François-Joseph Navez, a former pupil of Jacques-Louis David.
