Born Hans Peter Wilhelm Arp in Strasbourg in 1886 to a French mother and German father, Jean Arp navigated a shifting national identity throughout his life. After Alsace returned to France post-WWI, he legally became Jean Arp, though he continued to use "Hans" when speaking German.
