Johannes Theodorus "Jan" Toorop, born in Purworejo, Java, in the Dutch East Indies in 1858, journeyed from his Indonesian childhood to become one of the Netherlands' most distinctive artists. After moving to the Netherlands in 1869, he pursued art studies in Amsterdam, eventually joining the avant-garde artist groups L'Essor and Les XX in Brussels.
