Edgar Richard Johannes Fernhout, affectionately known as Eddy, was born in Bergen, North Holland, in 1912. Art was in his blood; he was the son of painter Charley Toorop and the grandson of the famous Jan Toorop. His early life was turbulent, marked by his parents' difficult marriage and financial struggles.
