Henry Ward Ranger, a leading American Tonalist, was the visionary who established the influential Old Lyme Art Colony in Connecticut.

ABOUT

Born in western New York State in 1858, Henry Ward Ranger showed early artistic promise, drawing and painting from a young age. His father, a commercial photographer with some artistic training, encouraged his talents. After studying at Syracuse University, Ranger moved to New York City in 1878, where he first encountered the evocative works of the Barbizon School, a pivotal moment in his artistic development.
