Anton Mauve

Anton Mauve, a leading Dutch realist painter of the Hague School, was a master colorist and significant early influence on his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh.

ABOUT

Born in Zaandam in 1838, Anthonij "Anton" Rudolf Mauve became a pivotal figure in Dutch art. After his father, a Mennonite chaplain, moved the family to Haarlem, Mauve began his artistic journey, apprenticing with painters Pieter Frederik van Os and Wouter Verschuur. He later collaborated with Paul Gabriël, painting from nature, and was encouraged by friends like Jozef Israëls and Willem Maris.
