Born in Bruges in 1545, Frans Pourbus the Elder was destined for a life in art, following in the footsteps of his prominent painter father, Pieter Pourbus. His artistic lineage was further strengthened by his maternal grandfather, Lancelot Blondeel, also a notable Bruges painter. Frans began his training early in his father's workshop, mastering the traditional Flemish style, and by the age of 15, he was already a chief assistant.
