Born Hans Emil Hansen in 1867, Emil Nolde grew up on a farm near the German-Danish border, a life he soon realized was not for him. He initially trained as a woodcarver and illustrator, working in furniture factories and teaching in Switzerland. However, his true passion was art, which he began pursuing seriously at the age of 31. After being rejected by the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1898, he dedicated himself to private painting classes and immersed himself in the cont…
