Born in Norway in 1852, Christian Krohg initially pursued a legal career at his father's request, graduating with a law degree in 1873. However, his passion for art led him to study at Johan Fredrik Eckersberg's art school in Christiania, and later in Germany under Hans Gude and Karl Gussow.
