Born in Antwerp in 1824, Charles Verlat showed artistic promise from a young age, leaving formal schooling at fourteen to study with prominent Belgian Romantic painters like Nicaise de Keyser and Gustave Wappers. His early works often drew from Belgian history, such as his 1843 painting, "Pippin the Short Killing a Lion."
