ABOUT

Born in Dordrecht, Netherlands, in 1795, Ary Scheffer inherited his artistic talent from both parents, his father a portrait painter and his mother a miniature painter. Encouraged by his family, he began his formal art education at the drawing academy in Amsterdam at just 11 years old. After his father's death, he moved to Paris in 1811 with his mother, who was a significant influence on his career, and studied at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts under Pierre-Narcisse Gu…
