Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian painter and sculptor of the École de Paris, is renowned for his elongated portraits and nudes, which were largely unappreciated during his short lifetime.
Born in Livorno, Italy, in 1884, Amedeo Clemente Modigliani came from a Sephardic Jewish family. His birth, coinciding with his father's business collapse, famously saved the family from ruin due to an ancient law protecting pregnant women's beds from creditors. Modigliani had a close relationship with his mother, who nurtured his early artistic talents, noting in her diary at age 11, "Perhaps an artist?"
