ABOUT

Born in 1823, Alexandre Cabanel, the son of a modest carpenter, rose through the ranks of the French art world to become one of the most celebrated painters of the Second Empire. His journey began at the Montpellier School of Fine Arts before he moved to Paris, entering the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts at just seventeen. After a couple of initial setbacks, he secured the coveted Prix de Rome scholarship in 1845, spending five formative years at the Villa Medici in Rome.…
