Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1881, Alexander Kanoldt inherited an artistic legacy from his father, Edmund Kanoldt, a painter in the Nazarene style. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, Kanoldt moved to Munich in 1908, where he connected with influential modernists like Alexej von Jawlensky, Wassily Kandinsky, and Gabriele Münter.
