Henryk Pillati was a Warsaw-born painter who trained at some of Europe's finest institutions, including the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, before spending time studying in Rome. Though he became best known as an illustrator for major Polish periodicals like Tygodnik Illustrowany and Kłosy, his roots were in history painting, and works like this cavalry charge reflect that earlier passion. He had a particular affinity for scenes from Polish military history, selling small paintings of Polish-Swedish war episodes early in his career just to survive after losing both parents to cholera as a teenager. Light cavalry, known in Polish military tradition through the legendary uhlans and lancers, held enormous symbolic weight in 19th-century Polish culture.
