Born in Warsaw in 1885, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, or Witkacy as he was known, was a true Renaissance man of the early 20th century. The son of a painter and art critic, he was homeschooled in Zakopane, where he was encouraged to develop diverse creative talents. Though he briefly studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, he largely forged his own path, becoming a prolific writer, painter, philosopher, and photographer.
