Born in the Russian Empire in 1885, Sonia Delaunay, née Sofia Ilinitchna Stern, led a life that spanned continents and artistic disciplines. After a privileged upbringing in Saint Petersburg, she pursued art education in Germany before settling in Paris in 1905.
