Born in the Russian Empire in 1885, Sonia Delaunay, née Sofia Ilinitchna Stern, led a life that spanned continents and artistic disciplines. After a privileged upbringing in Saint Petersburg, she pursued art education in Germany before settling in Paris in 1905. Early influences included Post-Impressionists like Van Gogh and Gauguin, and the Fauves. Her artistic journey took a pivotal turn after her marriage to fellow artist Robert Delaunay in 1910.
