Sakai Hōitsu

Sakai Hōitsu, a Japanese painter of the Rinpa school, famously revived the decorative style of Ogata Kōrin in the Edo period.

ABOUT

Born on August 1, 1761, in Edo, Sakai Hōitsu came from a prominent background; his father was the lord of Himeji Castle. Despite his noble lineage, Hōitsu pursued a life dedicated to art. His artistic journey was remarkably diverse, beginning with studies in the Kanō school before exploring ukiyo-e under Utagawa Toyoharu, the Maruyama school with Watanabe Nangaku, and nanga with Sō Shiseki.
