Born into an aristocratic French family in 1885, Roger de la Fresnaye received a classical education before honing his artistic skills at prestigious Parisian academies like the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts. Early in his career, around 1909, his work like "Woman with Chrysanthemums" showed the dreamlike Symbolist influence of the Les Nabis group, particularly his teachers Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier.
