ABOUT

Born in Lucca in 1708, Pompeo Batoni began his artistic journey as the son of a goldsmith before moving to Rome in 1727 to apprentice with masters like Agostino Masucci. His big break came in 1732 when, seeking shelter from a storm, nobleman Forte Gabrielli di Gubbio discovered Batoni drawing ancient bas-reliefs.
