Maruyama Ōkyo

Born Maruyama Masataka into a farming family in 1733, Maruyama Ōkyo moved to Kyoto as a teenager, where his artistic journey began. His early career included painting faces on dolls for a toy shop and creating 'megane-e' or 'eyeglass pictures' for European stereoscopes, which introduced him to Western perspective.
