Born Leendert Gestel in Woerden, Netherlands, in 1881, Leo Gestel was steeped in art from an early age. His father, Willem Gestel, directed an art school and provided his initial instruction, while his uncle, Dimmen Gestel, had even painted with Vincent van Gogh.
