Born Leendert Gestel in Woerden, Netherlands, in 1881, Leo Gestel was steeped in art from an early age. His father, Willem Gestel, directed an art school and provided his initial instruction, while his uncle, Dimmen Gestel, had even painted with Vincent van Gogh. Despite this artistic lineage, financial challenges often led Gestel to create advertisements for companies like Philips to make ends meet, showcasing his versatile talent beyond fine art.
