Born Laurits Andersen in a small village in southern Zealand in 1854, Ring's humble origins deeply influenced his artistic path. Though he began as a painter's apprentice and briefly studied at the Danish Academy of Arts, he found the classical training restrictive. In 1881, he adopted the name 'Ring' after his native village, a practice shared with his friend Hans Andersen, who became H. A. Brendekilde.
