Born in Philadelphia in 1857, Joseph Pennell became a prolific American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator. Despite a challenging early education and being expelled from the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, his talent for graphic arts was recognized, leading him to study under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
