Joseph Anton Koch, an Austrian painter, transformed classical landscape painting with rugged, mountainous scenery and became a central figure in the German Romantic movement in Rome.

ABOUT

Born in 1768 in the Tyrolese region of Elbigenalp, Joseph Anton Koch began his life tending cattle before his artistic talents were recognized. Through the recommendation of Bishop Umgelder, he received academic training at the strict Karlsschule Stuttgart. However, the rigid environment wasn't for him, and in 1791, he ran away, embarking on travels through France and Switzerland before finally arriving in Rome in 1795.
