Born in Jülich in 1807, Johann Wilhelm Schirmer initially trained in historical painting under Schadow at the Düsseldorf Academy. However, his artistic path soon shifted dramatically under the influence of Carl Friedrich Lessing, leading him to embrace landscape painting. Schirmer became known for his "historical landscapes," often drawing inspiration from the classical compositions of Nicolas Poussin.
