Jan Gossaert

Jan Gossaert, also known as Jan Mabuse, was a pioneering painter who brought the Italian Renaissance's classical forms and mythological nudes to Northern European art.

ABOUT

Born around 1478, Jan Gossaert, who adopted the name Mabuse from his birthplace of Maubeuge, was a pivotal figure in the Northern Renaissance. He first registered with the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1503, but his career took a significant turn with a journey to Rome in 1508-1509. This trip, undertaken with Philip of Burgundy, an illegitimate son of Philip the Good, exposed Gossaert to the classical art and architecture of Italy, profoundly influencing his style. He becam…
