Born in Chestertown, Maryland, in 1749, James Peale embarked on his artistic journey under the tutelage of his renowned elder brother, Charles Willson Peale, after serving apprenticeships in saddlery and cabinetmaking. His early career took a dramatic turn when he joined the Continental Army in 1776, rising to captain and fighting in pivotal Revolutionary War battles like Trenton, Princeton, and Brandywine.
