ABOUT

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1853, Howard Pyle showed an early talent for drawing and writing, encouraged by his mother. His formal art training was brief, consisting of three years in Philadelphia and a few lessons in New York. A pivotal moment came in 1876 when an article he wrote and illustrated about Chincoteague Island caught the attention of Scribner's Monthly, prompting him to move to New York to pursue illustration professionally.
