Born in Groningen in 1831, Hendrik Willem Mesdag came from a family that encouraged his artistic inclinations; his father was an amateur painter. Though he initially pursued a career in banking, a substantial inheritance from his wife Sina van Houten's father allowed Mesdag to retire at 35 and fully dedicate himself to art.
