Born in Salzburg in 1840, Hans Makart's early artistic journey was unconventional. Initially deemed 'devoid of all talent' and expelled from the Vienna Academy for his poor draughtsmanship, Makart's passionate love for color eventually found its champion in Karl Theodor von Piloty in Munich.
