Born Franz Seraph Lenbach in Schrobenhausen in 1836, Franz von Lenbach rose from humble beginnings to become one of Germany's most celebrated portrait painters. His artistic journey began with an apprenticeship to a sculptor and studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he later became a pupil of Karl von Piloty.
