Born in 1835 in the Tyrolean region of the Austrian Empire, Franz Defregger's early life was marked by both tragedy and a burgeoning artistic talent. After losing his mother and two sisters to typhoid, he found solace in music, playing the flugelhorn in a local band, and developed a self-taught knack for drawing and woodcarving on his family farm.
