Born in 1803, Eugène Isabey came from an artistic lineage; his father, Jean-Baptiste Isabey, was a renowned painter with ties to the House of Bonaparte. Despite his initial desire to become a sailor, Eugène was encouraged by his father to pursue painting—a reversal of the typical familial resistance to an artistic career.
