Born Elio Romano Erwitz in Paris in 1928 to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, Elliott Erwitt's early life saw him move from France to Italy and then to the United States in 1939. His journey into photography began with studies at Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research. After serving in the US Army as a photographer's assistant, Erwitt moved to New York in 1948, where he soon connected with photography giants like Edward Steichen, Robert Capa, and Roy…
