Born in Paris in 1848 into a prosperous military family, Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille showed early artistic promise. His grandfather had supplied arms to Napoleon, and his father, an amateur artist, nurtured his talents. At just seventeen, Detaille began his studies under the renowned military painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, who instilled in him a deep appreciation for accuracy and precision.
