Domenico Beccafumi was a Sienese Mannerist painter known for his ethereal, often phantasmagoric, religious and mythological scenes.
Born Domenico di Pace in Montaperti, near Siena, in 1486, Beccafumi's early talent for drawing was recognized by Lorenzo Beccafumi, a local landowner who adopted him and arranged for his artistic training. After an influential trip to Rome in 1509, where he encountered the burgeoning High Renaissance, Beccafumi returned to Siena.
