Born Chaim-Iche Solomonovich Sutin in Smilavichy, Russian Empire (present-day Belarus), Chaïm Soutine's early life was marked by poverty. He studied art in Vilnius before moving to Paris in 1913, where he immersed himself in the vibrant artistic life of Montparnasse. Living at La Ruche, a residence for struggling artists, he befriended fellow painters like Amedeo Modigliani, who painted his portrait several times.
