Born Eliza Cecilia Beaux in Philadelphia in 1855, Cecilia Beaux overcame early family challenges to become one of America's most celebrated portrait painters. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and her French father returned to France, leaving Cecilia and her sister to be raised by their maternal grandmother and aunts.
