Bertalan Székely

Bertalan Székely was a Hungarian history and portrait painter who explored both Romantic and Academic styles, eventually becoming director of the Hungarian Royal Drawing School.

ABOUT

Born in 1835 into a Transylvanian noble family, Bertalan Székely initially defied his family's wish for him to become an engineer, instead pursuing his passion for art. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1851 to 1855, studying under notable artists like Johann Nepomuk Geiger and Carl Rahl. After a period as an art teacher in his hometown, Székely moved to Munich, where his interest in history painting truly blossomed under the tutelage of Karl von Piloty.…
