Born Axel Waldemar Gallén in 1865, Akseli Gallen-Kallela became a pivotal figure in Finnish art, deeply intertwining his work with the burgeoning Finnish national identity. Despite his father's initial opposition to his artistic ambitions, Gallen-Kallela pursued art, studying in Helsinki and later in Paris at the Académie Julian.
