ABOUT THIS WORK

Ernest Waterlow was a distinguished British landscape painter who served as president of the Royal Watercolour Society and became a Royal Academician in 1903. Known for handling landscapes 'with grace and distinction' in both oil and watercolour, he was knighted in 1902 during King Edward VII's coronation honours. This painting, 'On the Mediterranean,' reflects Waterlow's fascination with continental scenery—he traveled extensively throughout Europe, including obtaining a passport in 1871 to journey across the continent. While many of his works depicted British landscapes and rural scenes, he also captured the light and atmosphere of Mediterranean settings, bringing the same refined sensibility that characterized his acclaimed career. The Mediterranean offered British artists of his era brilliant light, ancient ruins, and picturesque coastal villages—subjects that contrasted beautifully with the misty landscapes of home. Without seeing the specific work, we can imagine Waterlow would have approached this southern scene with his characteristic attention to atmospheric effects and natural beauty, possibly featuring cypress trees, sun-drenched hillsides, or coastal vistas rendered in his elegant style.
