ABOUT THIS WORK

Ernest Waterlow painted this coastal scene during his distinguished career as one of Britain's leading landscape painters. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1903 and knighted in 1902, Waterlow was celebrated for handling landscapes 'with grace and distinction' in both oil and watercolour. The Dorset Coast, with its dramatic cliffs and ever-changing light, was a beloved subject for British landscape painters of the period. Waterlow had been exhibiting since 1872 and built his reputation on capturing the atmospheric qualities of the British countryside and coastline.

Waterlow received his training at the Royal Academy schools, where he won the prestigious Turner medal for landscape painting in 1873—a fitting achievement for an artist who would spend his career exploring the relationship between land, sea, and sky that Turner himself had revolutionized. He served as president of the Royal Watercolour Society from 1897, suggesting he may have worked in watercolour on Dorset subjects as well as oils. His landscapes were characterized by their technical skill and sensitivity to natural light, qualities that would have served him well in capturing the particular luminosity of the Dorset coastline.
