ABOUT THIS WORK

The lurid glow of electric light bathes the faces of the patrons in this bustling scene from the Moulin Rouge, a popular Parisian cabaret. Here, a group of dancers, photographers, and poets are gathered around a table, their expressions ranging from contemplative to vacant. The harsh, artificial glare, a novelty in 1892, allowed for striking color contrasts, most notably the shocking acid green on the face of singer May Milton at the far right. This painting captures the unique atmosphere of late nineteenth-century café-concerts, places of drinking and entertainment that fascinated artists of the period. The artist, a frequent visitor to the Moulin Rouge, even had a permanently reserved table, allowing him intimate access to the characters depicted.
