A man in traditional prayer clothes dominates this canvas, his face a study in solemnity. He is shown mid-prayer, head tilted slightly, his hands clasped. The artist intentionally limited the palette to blacks, whites, and muted grays, enhancing the gravitas of the scene. This choice reflects the artist's desire to document the disappearing traditions he observed in his hometown of Vitebsk (now Belarus). While deeply rooted in tradition, the work also incorporates modern artistic trends, particularly Cubism, evident in the slightly distorted features of the model and the abstract background. This painting is one of three versions of this composition, created in 1923 after the artist discovered many of his earlier works had been lost during World War I.
