ABOUT THIS WORK

Richard Serra's "Illumination" from 1959 offers a glimpse into the very early career of an artist who would become renowned for his monumental sculptures in steel. At this point, Serra was still studying, having pursued English literature before shifting to visual art and eventually earning degrees from both the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Yale University. While he would later famously move away from painting after seeing Velázquez's "Las Meninas" in the Prado Museum, deciding he couldn't surpass that skill, this lithograph predates that pivotal moment. It's a testament to his formative years, before his radical experiments with materials like lead and rubber, and before he began to explore the relationship between the viewer, the work, and the site through massive, site-specific installations. The work shows an artist exploring printmaking, a medium he would revisit throughout his career, often with a stark, minimalist aesthetic. This piece stands in contrast to the heavy, industrial forms that would define his mature style, offering a quiet, introspective moment from a sculptor celebrated for his powerful physical presence.
