Demogorgon in the Cave of Eternity, plate one from Demogorgon and the Deities

In this striking chiaroscuro woodcut, a powerful, nude male figure, Demogorgon, emerges from a dark cave, surrounded by swirling, otherworldly forms. His body is rendered with a dramatic play of light and shadow, characteristic of the chiaroscuro technique, which uses multiple blocks to create varying tones. The limited palette of black, green, and buff paper enhances the mystical atmosphere, making the figure seem to glow with an inner light against the deep recesses of the cave. This print is the first in a series depicting Demogorgon and the Deities, a subject drawn from classical mythology. The artist, Hendrick ter Brugghen, created this work around 1588–90, early in his career, before he became known as one of the Utrecht Caravaggisti. Here, he explores the visual power of stark contrasts and the expressive potential of the woodcut medium to evoke a sense of ancient, primordial force.
